Use me in 2010…

“Here am I, Lord… use me.”
Sounds simple; yet, it is a prayer that has changed my life over and over again. In the last several years, God has answered this prayer, “to be used by Him,” in some incredible ways.
As I reflect on 2009, I can’t help but realize how it has been a huge blessing to be used by God. I love to serve the Church and to help people in ministry to connect with families. He has truly opened up some incredible doors to serve.
So, as I continue to review my calendar for the next year, I thought I’d share my speaking schedule. My hope is that I will get a chance to meet you at one of these locations:

The D6 Conference
Dallas, TX

The Leadership Conference at Southeast Christian Church

If you’re going to be at any of these conferences and you’d like to connect, email me: michael@pureconnect.org. It would be a blessing and an honor to meet you and learn about your ministry.

One last thing, I have left a few dates on my calendar to serve local churches. Making time to teach and train at other churches has been a great blessing; and, it has helped me to grow some great new relationships. If you need help moving your ministry to the next level, please let me know. I would be honored to serve you and your team.
I am available to speak or teach on the following topics:
Parenting and Family Ministry
Children’s Ministry
Leading from Your Strengths
Advanced Leadership: The Marine Corps Way
Leaving a Strategic Legacy

I hope our paths cross this year…

Connecting to children

The mission statement for the Elementary Ministry at Southeast Christian Church is “connecting kids to Jesus and one another.” Everything we do is filtered through this mission. As soon as the children enter our wing, we are striving to build a relationship, to help foster new friendships, and to connect them to Jesus. Our mission statement is tied into everything we do; it is our DNA.

To translate this mission and make it come to life, we have to help our volunteers develop the ability to communicate effectively with children. As adults, we become accustomed to, well… to talking and thinking like adults. This generational difference interferes with our ability to relate to children. Consider this; adults probably can speak with some knowledge about current events, the weather, or who is running for president. Most children could care less about these topics; it is comparable to the attitude we adults may have when asked to discuss who is more powerful: Pikachu, Bulbasur, or Charmander. All of those being Pokemon characters, in case you didn’t know. While some adults have no problem relating, there are many individuals who, whether by intimidation or a fear of rejection, are unable to connect or even relate to the kids in their ministry.

With this in mind, here are some steps to narrow the gap and breakdown the communication barriers.
1. Posture – To connect to kids we have to get on their level. Think about it like this, when was the last time you had a conversation while staring into someone’s belly button? Ok, I don’t really want to know the answer to that. When we talk to children, it helps to bend at the waist (or take a knee) so we can look them in the eyes during the conversation.
2. Vocabulary – Have you ever tried to read stereo instructions? Talking to kids often means we have to make an effort to use words they understand. If you are looking them in the face, see Posture above, you should be able to see the confusion in their faces when you are making no sense at all. If you are talking to them and they get that glazed over “what are you talking about look?” Try repeating your point in simpler terms. Instead of using words like “repent,” which most adults can’t define, ask them, “What does God want us to do when we sin?” “Should we keep sinning or stop?”
3. Names – Learn their names, memorize them, and use it when you greet them, speak to them, and when you pray for them.
4. Consistency – Nothing says you care like showing up. It communicates to them, in action and truth that you care. Jesus didn’t make disciples by spending one hour a month with them, how can we expect to?
5. Commonality – When we choose our friends it has a lot to do with the things we have in common. When you spend time with children, find something you have in common with them. Whether it is a passion for sports, a love for music, or a similar life experience (i.e. your parents are divorced) it will help you to relate to one another.

Finally, as those who are charged with ministering to the next generation of Christ followers, we must find a way to relate the gospel message to their world and be diligent in doing so. Don’t spend all of your time talking to the other adults you serve with. Make the most of each moment by connecting to the children. Communicate you care and let them know you are there to help. Get to know them and get on their level. Consider what Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 9:21-23 (NIV) “To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law), so as to win those not having the law. To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some. I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.”

Teach children; change the world…

Supporting Orphan Impact

Travel to a third world country will change your life. It convicts and challenges us to evaluate our blessed station in life. Some individuals are moved from conviction to action. Craig Jutila is one such person.

When I first heard Craig’s vision to help other families adopt children from over seas I was on board. I saw the need first hand during my travels as a Marine. I knew it was the right thing to do. However, I didn’t know how I could help until I met Jessica Jenkins the Director of Operations for Orphan Impact.

Please take a moment to read Jessica’s guest blog and prayerfully consider supporting Orphan Impact. Your church could play a key role in helping to connect families to orphans who desperately need hope.

“Orphan Impact International began four years ago when founders, Craig and Mary Jutila adopted their daughter from Kazakhstan. Through the process they felt God moving their hearts toward the miracle of adoption and the orphans of the world. They quickly realized that completing their adoption was not the end of God’s hand of adoption in their lives.
The Jutilas decided to make adoption a reality for more families, so they set out to form a ministry to make that possible. Today, Orphan Impact is a thriving adoption grant and orphan care ministry. They have assisted many families over the years and have heard countless stories of God doing the impossible with His provision.
There are a number of ways to get involved with Orphan Impact. The main focus for the ministry is children and families. We operate under the belief that if children are given a good model of service through the elders in their lives now, that will set them up for success in the future. Currently, we have an eight-week curriculum teaching children the importance of caring for orphans. This can be done in a church or home environment. Also provided with the curriculum are quarter tubes, each tube holds fifteen dollars and the money is sent back to Orphan Impact for the family grant fund.

We are excited about the things God is doing at Orphan Impact and would love to tell you more, you contact us at info@orphanimpact.com

Do you know what is more encouraging than God’s Word?

Is it a kind word from a friend? No…
Is it a brand new car? Nooo….
Is it a chocolate milkshake? Nope…

Give up? Let me give you a hint…

It has rhythm.
It will make you smile.
It’s great for the whole family.

Ok, ok… I’ll tell you….

it’s GOD’S WORD set to great music!

If you have a hard time getting your kids to memorize God’s Word?
Have you ever wanted to fill your home, car, or office with the sound of scriptures set to great music?
What if you could be encouraged through worship that is safe and fun for the whole family?

By setting scripture to cool music with a great beat, Seeds Family Worship makes all of this possible!

Seeds has been a real blessing to me. On days when I am feeling a little discouraged and very hurried, I pop one of their albums in my cd player and it helps me to get my focus back. There really is nothing more encouraging than God’s Word. The great thing about having His Word set to music is that you can listen to it on the go. I even find myself singing the songs all day; because, they are so catchy and fun.

“So neither he who plants is anything nor he who waters, but [only] God Who makes it grow and become greater.”
I Corinthians 3:7

A little more about Seeds Family Worship:

Seeds Family Worship was planted when worship leader Jason Houser recognized a need for quality music for the families of his church. He began writing songs and singing them with the kids and families he knew. The songs were well-crafted, catchy, and taken straight from scripture. Now, five albums later, the seeds of God’s Word have been planted in the hearts of thousands of families all over the world.

Seeds Family Worship is about planting God’s Word in the hearts of families.

Why do they do it?
The crew at Seeds Family Worship believes getting families worshiping God and learning scripture together is more important than anything else. Period. So, whether it’s an album of music, a live event, a conference, or a new product, everything they do grows out of that motivation and encouragement. That’s what I like about them.

God’s Word + Good Music + Family Time + Lots of Fun = Seeds Family Worship

To book Seeds Family Worship Live at your church, contact them at 615-463-7398.
As much fun as the albums are, the live events must be a great time.

To be a Hero.

My heart cringes when I see my children stumbling over my same sins… pride, envy, and jealousy. Patiently, I try to correct them. I search for the root issue leading them to fall. Then, I wonder. I wonder if they will follow the same dark path I took as a teen. I pray they do not.

I pray my children don’t repeat my mistakes.

Watching your child fall into or even struggle with temptation is horrible. It is one of the most difficult things a parent endures. It’s difficult because we doubt our ability to point them in the right way. We doubt our own ability to overcome the same trials. We doubt if God will bless our efforts when we are so very fallen. When we see our children repeat our own sins we feel hopelessly defeated and lost.

Would it be a great blessing to know of one family that got it right? Would you like to hear the testimony of a father who’s son turned away from multiple generations of sinful living to live a life of purity? I would. Without a doubt, it would be a story of heroic efforts.

I was recently blessed to get an advanced copy of my new friend’s book. It is an account of one father’s struggle to overcome his affair with pornography. More so, it is a story of how his son championed the same cause with unbelievable purity. It is a story of how a son became his father’s hero.hero-3_sm1

If you have ever doubted your ability to raise Godly children because of your own sin…

If Satan has lied to you convincing you that your child is destined to follow in your footsteps…

… then, you need to read this story.

Fred Stoeker, author of the Every Man’s Battle series, pours out his heart once again. He shares the story of Jasen, his son and his hero. It is a compelling call to live a life of pure devotion to Christ. Packed with great insights and thought provoking perspectives, Fred dispels the enemy’s lies and challenges men to take a stand for their faith.

“Hero: Becoming the Man She Desires” is due to be released on April 21st. Visit www.FredStoeker.com and order the men in your church a prereleased signed copy today! Additionally, Fred has created a group on www.parentunity.org to connect with his readers.

Buy the book and connect with the author in his group for Men: Every Man’s Group.

When you join the group, share with us your thoughts. We, Fred and I, are looking forward to hearing how “Hero” touches your life and changes your family.
